What is the What: The Autobiography of Valentino Achak Deng
by Dave Eggers
"I am blessed to have lived to inform you that even when my hours were darkest, I believed that someday I could share my experiences with others. This book is a form of struggle, and it keeps my spirit alive to struggle. To struggle is to strengthen my faith, my hope, and my belief in humanity. Since you and I exist, together we can make a difference!"
-Valentino Achak Deng
I recently finished this amazing book of how a boy and thousands (The "Lost Boys") of others are separated from their Sudanese families and live their childhoods in refugee camps. He and many others lived in Ethiopia, Kenya, and finally made it to the United States to tell his story. I highly recommend this book. If you ever feel like your life is difficult and you read a book like this or Strength in What Remains you feel very fortunate for all you have..
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
by Alexie Sherman
This is another book I recently finished. Alexie Sherman is an American Indian that grew up on The Spokane Indian Reservation in Washington State. Over the years I have been lucky enough to read multiple of his books and poetry. He is also a filmmaker. As a student at Montana State taking Native American Studies I first was exposed to Sherman Alexie and his works. This book by far was my favorite of his stuff....It will have you laughing and crying all within a few pages of reading...Hope you enjoy...Cheers and Happy Reading!!!
