Some Recent Reads...

Recently I picked up a few books from my wife's book club pile that I thought I would bring along on our 1800 mile road trip back to Minnie for the holidays...Neither of them are books I would necessarily pick out on my own but since they had already been purchased and my book budget was getting low for the year I grabbed them and was hoping for the best!! It just so happens they both were set in Minnesota...Kind of ironic since that is our homeland and that is where we were heading...

This first book by Diablo Cody I figured I would like because I loved the movie Juno...She wrote that too...As you can see it is a "year in the life of an unlikely stripper." As in the movie mentioned above this book was equally as comical....She did not hold anything back as she was writing of her experiences as a stripper in Minneapolis.....She made me wonder where these characters come from in such a religious state...ha....Then again, as an RN I ask myself daily, where the heck do these patients come from??? This is a super fast and fun reading book...Hope you enjoy..

The second book I had picked out was Freedom by Jonathan Franzen...I have never read any of his books so I did not know what to expect...Molly said she enjoyed it so I figured I might too....Even though that is not generally the case...WE both have very different books we would choose to read....From the start of reading this book, it is hard not to wonder why is it called Freedom? Is the freedom from family( both parents and spouse/offspring), from responsibility, from life in general, or is it about the birds that Walter loves as they seem to be such a free spirited animal??
There are many aspects covered in the book from population control (which I feel will continue to be an important political topic in the future), to other hot political topics, to money/happiness/and depression, and also covers work and happiness....This last topic is something I have talked about with my brother and friends extensively since the day I can remember even thinking of having to work for the rest of our lives......I grew up in a house where both of my parents loved their work and truly seemed passionate about it; so as a long time college student(almost 8 years) it was hard to believe I would not be the same....I feel these days that is harder and harder to find!! Anyways, with that being said it was a great book and made ya think of different aspects going on in your life!!! Cheers and hope all is well with my friends/family who read this....
